The perfumes and anointing oils I made required two things:
- Glass roller-ball bottles (0.35 oz)
- Fractionated coconut oil
- This is such a good choice for essential oil diluting. FCO is a cold-pressed oil that has had the long chain fatty acids removed. This means that the oil will remain liquid at room temperature (unlike whole coconut oil).
- This oil is also colorless, non-greasy, easily absorbed into the skin, generally scentless (or it has a light coconut scent, light enough to blend into other scents perfectly), and resists turning rancid for much longer than it’s solid-at-room-temp sibling.
These recipes require a particular size bottle. If you adapt the recipes to fit different containers, please check your dilution ratio. I blended my scents to be generally safe on all skin types, but if you have especially sensitive skin, I wouldn’t be surprised if you noticed a little irritation. Discontinue use if that’s the case.
I had a tiny glass funnel for creating these perfumes, and also used plastic pipettes, changing the pipette between types of oils.
Furthermore, while I LOVE all of these scents, I found that they did not work well for very long-term wear. To be completely fair, I find that MANY perfumes don’t last as long as I’d like. However, essential oils are volatile oils, meaning they evaporate very quickly (hence, they be smellin a lot). Most essential oils don’t make great perfumes because of this. Diluting them in something like FCO or lotion can make an impact, but you really want to add some type of stabilizing agent to prolong the scent.
I was, I’m sorry to say, attempting to make “natural” products at the time, so I never experimented with stabilizers. One of the more commonly used products for this purpose is propylene glycol, which sounded too unnatural to me. Essential oils are really really cool ingredients, but they simply do not compare to synthetic fragrance longevity.
Roll-On Perfumes
To a 0.35 oz roller, add:
Full Moon, Vivave, or Witch’s Brew Perfume:
10 drops oils of choice
Fill with fractionated coconut oil
Groovy Perfume
6 drops Patchouli
2 drops Lavender
Fill with fractionated coconut oil
Clear (Headache relief) Perfume
4 drops Rosemary
2 drops Black Spruce
2 drops Lavender
2 drops Frankincense
Fill with fractionated coconut oil
Anointing Oils
These oils are clearly inspired by tarot cards. The way they ended up paired with a particular card was an intuitive process that involved a lot of perfume huffing. The inclusions were picked to support the card, and are not required.
To a 0.35 oz roller, add:
9 of Pentacles (prosperity)
3 Fenugreek seeds
1 dried peppermint leaf
3-4 drops Hemlock
2 drops Bergamot Mint
1-2 drops Sweet Orange
Fill with fractionated coconut oil
This oil is simply delicious. I used it as a little bit of folk magic, to draw prosperity to me.
The Lovers (love, connection)
Rose Petal (dry)
Raspberry Leaf (dry)
1 Garnet
3 drops Juniper Needle
3 drops Palmarosa
1 drop Geranium
Fill with fractionated coconut oil
This may be my favorite thing I’ve ever made, and it was also my mom’s favorite. After her death, I considered renaming this blend for her. However, I ended up spinning down the whole business and went back to retail work, instead. Having your mom die suddenly and without warning kind of fucks you up!
I’ll warn you that I like to use divisive scents, and Palmarosa is one of those. It’s has a rose-like scent, but the oil comes from a grass, not a flower, so it has a very distinct herbal/earthy element. I couldn’t convince one customer that the oil wasn’t rancid, it’s supposed to smell like that, lol. She was sure that the rose petal had started to decompose and that she was smelling rot. Nope! Put the actual flower out of your mind as you smell palmarosa, and instead, allow the scent to be its own unique experience.
The High Priestess (spiritual connection)
White Sage leaf (dry)
1 Frankincense tear
3 drops Douglas Fir
3 drops Palo Santo
2 drops Frankincense
Fill with fractionated coconut oil
This was a best-seller, and is perfect for ritual or magic(k)al use. The oils and inclusions are all treated as sacred in different areas, and the scent is elevating. Over time, the frankincense tear (a piece of the tree resin) starts to dissolve into the oil, adding a robust but bright frankincense aroma.
If you’d like to avoid over-harvested crops when creating this blend, try swapping out ingredients for similar smelling ones. Instead of Palo Santo, try Ho Wood (Cinnamomum camphora var linalool). Instead of a piece of white sage, add a pine needle.
Alternatives to frankincense could be Elemi and Opoponax. Myrrh is also a good option, but use a teensy tinsy amount, as it’ll overpower this blend for sure.
